Juneau County, Wisconsin JCHwySign1904

Located in central Wisconsin, Juneau County is one of the four Wisconsin counties making up the geographical tourist area known as Wisconsin Dells. Stretched across Sauk, Columbia, Juneau, and Adams counties the Dells-Delton tourist area includes attractions and destinations from the neighboring communities of Baraboo, Lake Delton, and Wisconsin Dells (formerly Kilbourn City).

Separated by the historic Wisconsin River, Juneau County sits to the west of Adams County. Wood County sits north, on top of Juneau County, while Sauk County sits to the south. Vernon, Monroe, and Jackson Counties share their eastern borders with Juneau County.

Known for its natural rural settings, Juneau County is home to many recreational opportunities including Castle Rock Lake (Wisconsin's fourth-largest inland lake) and Petenwell Lake (Wisconsin's second-largest inland lake), both man-made lakes created in the late 1940s by the construction of dams on the Wisconsin River. The Castle Lake flowage covers more than 16,600 acres while Petenwell flows across more than 23,000 acres. Together these two Juneau County lakes account for over 60 square miles of recreation.

In addition to these two magnificent lakes Juneau County is also home to several Wisconsin State Parks and Recreational Areas.

Northern Juneau County is home to the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge (NNWR). Created in the aftermath of the Great Depression, the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge covers some 44,000 acres and annually serves many species of migrating waterfowl. From Karner Blue Butterflies to Timber Wolves and Bears, the refuge is home to a wide variety of wildlife.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census data, more than twenty-six thousand (26,664) people call Juneau County, Wisconsin home.

As the largest community in Juneau County, Mauston (population 4,411) serves as the county seat, and is joined by Elroy, Necedah, and New Lisbon as Juneau County's largest communities. The villages of Camp Douglas, Hustler, Lyndon Station, Union Center, and Wonewoc round out the communities that make up Juneau County.

Juneau County is home in all or part to 10 school districts. Five have their high schools located within Juneau County. These five Wisconsin school districts include Mauston, Necedah, New Lisbon, Royall (Elroy), and Wonewoc-Center. Five additional Wisconsin school districts draw students from Juneau County, but have their high school located outside of Juneau County. This second group of Wisconsin school districts includes: Hillsboro, Nekoosa, Reedsburg, Tomah, and Wisconsin Dells.

The 10 Wisconsin school districts that make up Juneau County compete in three different Wisconsin high school athletic conferences. The Hillsboro, Necedah, New Lisbon, Royall, and Wonewoc-Center High Schools are all currently members of the Scenic Bluffs Conference.

The Mauston, Nekoosa, and Wisconsin Dells High Schools compete in the South Central Conference. The Reedsburg High School is a member of the Badger North Conference while the Tomah High School competes in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Juneau County was once home to yet another public school, but the Camp Douglas High School was disbanded. The same fate fell to Mauston Madonna High School.
